All child care professionals are responsible to keep the children in their care healthy and safe. Individuals who care for and teach children need to know how to 1) create safe spaces, 2) use safe practices with children, 3) develop and implement daily illness prevention and management strategies, and 4) plan to keep children safe if an emergency occurs. This six-hour module provides an overview of all required health and safety topics from the Child Care and Development Block Grant (CCDBG).

Learning Objectives

Module objectives:

Safe spaces
 
1. Determine key safety concerns for children in child care homes and centers.
2. Identify early care and education (ECE) professionalsâ€TM roles in keeping children safe in child care settings.
 
Transportation safety
 
1. Identify safe transportation guidelines and best practices including child passenger safety, pickup and
drop-off points, family consent, adult/child ratios, supervision, and safety restraints.
2. Identify vehicle safety including driver requirements and competency, vehicle requirements and safety
consideration, and transportation first aid kits.
 
Handling and storage of hazardous materials
 
1. Describe why children are more susceptible than adults to the effects of hazardous materials.
2. Identify proper storage and handling procedures of hazardous materials.
3. Demonstrate how to use Safety Data Sheets.
4. Describe Standard Precautions for prevention of exposure to blood-borne pathogens.
 
Emergency preparedness

1. Explain the importance of a written emergency preparedness plan for every child care facility.
2. Identify the emergency preparedness roles for child care center owners, center directors, family child
care professionals, and staff who work in child care centers and homes when an emergency occurs.
 
Prevention and control of infectious disease

1. Identify common ways that infections are spread and how to prevent their spread.
2. Describe inclusion and exclusion practices for common illnesses.
3. Apply nationally recommended practices for cleaning and sanitizing.
4. Review vaccination recommendations for adults and children as determined by the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention.
5. Determine how vaccination records can be verified as up-to-date.

Food and allergic reactions and how to respond
 
1. Describe common food and other allergens.
2. Identify how a young child might describe an allergic reaction.
3. Determine ways to prevent allergic reactions for children with known allergies.
4. Describe appropriate steps for handling an allergy emergency.

Administration of Medication

1. Identify correct procedures for ECE staff to follow to receive, store, prepare, and administer medications.
2. List the information to be included in the medication administration log.
3. List the Five Rights of medication administration.

Shaken Baby Syndrome/Abusive Head Trauma

1. Define Shaken Baby Syndrome/Abusive Head Trauma (SBS/AHT).
2. Identify why infants are susceptible to SBS/AHT.
3. Identify strategies to reduce the risk of SBS/AHT.
4. Recognize and respond to signs and symptoms of SBS/AHT.
5. Identify resources for SBS/AHT.

Safe Sleep and SUIDS Prevention

1. Identify common beliefs and misconceptions about SUIDS.
2. Understand the behaviors that affect the risk of sleep-related SUIDS.
3. Implement safe sleep practices and environments for infants.
