Learning Objectives

Students will be able to:

Module 1 - Your New Role:

1. Explain the importance of quality care for children.
2. List factors that indicate quality care.

Module 1 - Professionalism:

1. Discover the professional qualities needed by family child care professionals.
2. Examine considerations necessary for making ethical decisions when working with children and families.
3. List expectations for professional dress and behavior.
4. Interpret the purpose of ongoing professional development.

Module 2 - Healthy Spaces:

1. Differentiate between different levels of cleaning that are needed when working with groups of children.
2. Determine proper storage and handling procedures of hazardous materials.
3. Identify common ways that infections are spread and how to prevent their spread.
4. Describe what you can do to keep children and yourself healthy.
5. Identify correct procedures to follow to receive, store, prepare, and administer medications.
6. Describe appropriate steps for handling an allergy emergency.

Module 2 - Keeping Children Safe:

1. Examine the changes in safety concerns as children grow and develop.
2. Identify safe transportation guidelines and best practices.
3. Determine ways to reduce risk to make children safer.
4. Distinguish how to plan and practice for emergency situations.
5. Explain a professional’s role in protecting children from abuse.
6. Implement safe sleep practices and environments for infants.

Module 2 - Supervision:

1. Define proper supervision for children of all ages.
2. Describe requirements for supervision of children in a family child care home.
3. List procedures needed to provide proper supervision of children.

Module 3 - Child Development:

1. Examine cognitive, social/emotional, and physical development in infants through school-age children.
2. Apply the components of developmentally appropriate practice and how to use them in your work with children.

Module 3 - Learning Through Play:

1. Discover the stages of social/emotional and cognitive play.
2. Explore different types of play materials and play spaces.
3. Summarize the role of adults in supporting children's play.

Module 3 - Guiding Behavior:

1. Recognize processes in the brain that are needed for self-control.
2. Discover ways to plan for play to help children learn executive function skills.
3. Identify ways to prevent behavior problems.
4. Describe positive guidance that helps children learn self-control.

Module 3 - Insights from Observation:

1. Distinguish what information professionals can gain by observing children.
2. Discover a variety of methods for recording different types of observations.
3. Describe how to use information learned from observations to plan for and interact with children and parents.

Module 4 - Communication:

1. Summarize the three qualities of good communication.
2. Use characteristics of good communication with children.
3. Describe a variety of ways to communicate with families.
4. Discover the importance of keeping private information confidential.

Module 4 - Partnerships with Families:

1. Distinguish changes to the definition of "family" over time.
2. Identify and become aware of personal biases, values, and beliefs, that may influence your work with children and their families.
3. Describe ways to treat each family and child in your care with respect.
4. Summarize ways to build connections with families to provide quality care for children.

Module 4 - Nurturers Needed:

1. List qualities of nurturing professionals.
2. Determine your own style of nurturing.
