This training will meet the annual DHS Fire Safety Training requirement by covering fire safety and prevention. Participants will learn how fires occur, how to prevent fires, review emergency fire evacuation plans, how to conduct monthly fire drills, review maintenance of smoke detectors and other fire systems, review maintenance and use of fire extinguishers, and planning escape routes for children and staff in a child care setting.

Learning Objectives

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

During this period of instruction the student will learn:

1. Basic concepts of fire chemistry, fire characteristics and fire behavior.

2. The essential importance of fire prevention in maintaining a safe environment and
to safeguard the lives of children in care.

3. Actions to be taken if smoke, fire or other hazardous conditions are detected
inside a child care facility.

4. How to request help in an emergency as well as for emergency planning from
local fire agencies.

5. The potential adverse consequences of not following established fire safety
recommendations.

6. Acquisition, installation, maintenance, inspection and use of appropriate portable
fire extinguishers (PFEs).

7. The acronym P.A.S.S. As it relates to portable fire extinguisher (PFE) deployment.

8. Why conducting regular evacuation drills are essential to the safety of children and
staff of child care facilities.

9. The essential importance of full accountability of children and staff occupying child
care facilities to maintain safety before, during and after building evacuation
exercises (practice drills and in actual emergencies).

10.The essential importance of 'single station' smoke alarms; the proper location,
regular testing and maintenance of these devices. Also, where provided, the
responsibilities for inspection, testing and maintenance of monitored automatic fire
alarm systems as well as automatic fire sprinkler systems.

11. Local resources are available to assist child care providers with emergency
planning.
